Upcycled, Recycled, Post Modern, Glitzy Santa Treat Container

A certain coffee (starts with “f”) comes in these neat red plastic “cans.” To a container freak like myself they seemed way too cool to just toss. The red just yelled “Santa!” at me so i just added the details. Felt features were glued on with instant Gorilla Glue. The glittery pipecleaner hat was glued with glittery “snow” in a tube. When dry the loose ends were kinked up and pulled together with yarn in a slipknot and the pompom was wound up. A little yarn trim around the top of Santa’s head and we are ready for goodies!

It all started with a post from DollarStoreCrafts.com showing some really cool sugar skull rings. I knew our Spanish teacher always did something with the skulls around Halloween so I showed them to her and we got all excited. The fly in the ointment was that we could not find the white skull rings. While looking I found a silicon ice cube tray and thought about the blob of scrap polymer clay I had hanging around. I got the ice cube tray, went home and created cool skulls that the Spanish classes enjoyed making their own.
I mixed up several batches of Premo-scupley-kato-fimo-ultralight-TLS in the color of white-translucent-ecru, in my trusty mini food processor. I powdered the ice cube tray with cornstarch and plopped a smooth oval shaped blob in each spot.

Smooth oval balls of Polymer clay went in each skulll

Then I powdered the tops of the blobs and mushed each one with the bottom of the Gorilla Glue super glue bottle. (A large nail polish bottle would also work). I then turned the skulls out and wedged a large jumpring in the top of each one, pinching their “cheeks” a bit as I did so. I baked them for an hour at 275 and let them cool down in the oven ( I use an electric roaster for baking clay) when they were cool, each jump ring got a tug and any that seemed loose got a bit of the Gorilla Super Glue.

They each look a little different after Mama pinched their cheeks

The High School students got to decorate these using fine tip permanent markers and then they were strung on cord so they can wear them. There were many super, fancy skulls. The kids’ personality really showed on these little skulls.

Fancy!

I may have to make sure I build another scrap bowl of bone colors for next year!

Plastics-The Real Stuff

So I got to thinking after my last post about how I said resin was to be my next project post.  Polymer clay, Plastic canvas, Perler beads, resin. What do they have in common? Plastic. Lots and lots of plastic. I began to wonder about my draw to plastic… Maybe being a child of the 60′s has something to do with it. I got to thinking about the Creepy Crawler oven my brother had. I had the Flower Power set. We also had Batman and Creeple People molds.  We had lots of bottles of Plasti-goop. Who knows how many brain cells we killed off  hovering over the ThingMaker oven, watching our creations cure.  And how many times did we burn our fingers? Enough to learn that “Caution: Hot” meant what it said.  By the way, Creepy Crawlers still exists, but the “goop” cooks with a light bulb and the “oven” is well enclosed. There is probably even a warning about using the set up in a well-ventilated area. Sheesh!!

Anyway, I think maybe those early experiences shaped me and made me the plastics-fiend I am today… Anyone else smile when they think of bright green cockroaches that glow in the dark?

Bronze Clay original pendant

Several months ago I made this Bronze clay pendant representing the encouraging Footprints in the Sand poem. It turned out pretty well and I have enjoyed wearing it. Many folks have commented on it. I thought it might be a nice idea to make a few more to encourage others. I tried many times to recreate this pendant and did not have much luck getting it just right. The last time I tried it, I thought I had it, put it in the kiln to fire, and patiently waited and kept watch on my (non digital-what was I thinking?) kiln. Once the firing was done, I waited and waited for things to cool down, finally stuck an eager hand into all that charcoal and pulled up…nothing. Nothing but a few pieces, flakes really, of sort-of fused bronzish stuff. Apparently my clay went bad while I was messing around with it. Disappointed, I put the idea away for a while.

I somehow got to thinking about all I had seen on mold making and decided to look into that so I could maybe make the pedants out of polymer clay. I got some molding putty, and discovered that when they say press the “putty” onto the object, not the other way around, they mean it. After a couple tries I  got a decent mold of the pendant.

Finally got a good mold.

I molded a pedant with gold Premo. Not bad, but it needed some antiquing or something. Wiped on the acrylic paint, rubbed it off–completely. Hmmmm. Tried again. Could not get the paint to stay behind. Tried letting the paint dry and then rubbing it off. Better, but still not what I wanted (and more work!)

Antiquing, not so good...

Why is this so hard?? Finally I thought about creating a darker pendant and using pearlex to highlight– BINGO! I now have a few pendants and can work on creating more and refining things.

There we go!

I enjoy getting an opportunity to try new techniques and learn new skills. This project definitely challenged me and my problem solving skills.  Next up? Resin!!

This will not DO!

More posts! I need more posts. I must share what I am doing…. I must do stuff to share!

My latest work has been to attempt the last few tutorials from Cindy Lietz (polymer clay tutor). I have made a gingham cane, “knitted” swatches and a shaded rose cane. So far so good, just need to put them to use!

I will get some pix to update this post.

And Now a Swap!

I just joined the Craft Social “I heart Craft Social” Valentines Swap. Hmmm, what will I make? I am going to have to delve into my stash and come up with something special. If you are interested here is a link to the fun: I heart Craft Social Swap.

Fancy Jars!

Decorated storage jars. Tops made with polymer clay.

Upcycled jars. I saw similar jars on a website, but the tops were made from paper. I loved the look and decided to see what I could do using polymer clay. I started with a form of Ultralight Sculpey and baked it. I mixed clay colors with translucent clay, then extruded lengths of colors. Once I started winding the strands around the baked Ultralight, I hardly knew when to stop! These colorful storage jars would look great in the kitchen or a teen’s room or maybe a crafty studio. These are my entry for Crafting with the Stars Challenge.

Life is Like a Box of… Crayons!!

A first post on a new blog. Lots of possibilities. Just
like a new box of crayons. They are all so pretty and sharp and
pointy. You want to draw something really cool with them, but you
don’t want to mess up the pretty display. Eventually you just dig
in, peel the wrappers and get busy creating. I hope you will join
me and enjoy the journey of making a joyful creative mess!
